Logistics Guide · 2026
From Mérida, Mexico City, Cancún, and the United States — direct flights, Maya Train, ADO bus, and driving routes. Once you're inside the walls, everything is walkable.
Campeche has its own international airport — Aeropuerto Internacional Alberto Acuña Ongay (CPE). It's 10 minutes by car from the historic center; a taxi runs about $250–350 MXN ($15–20 USD), depending on time of day. Aeroméxico operates direct daily flights from Mexico City (MEX); Mexicana connects from AIFA (NLU) in select seasons.
For many international travelers (United States, Europe, Canada), a practical option is to fly into Mérida (MID) and continue to Campeche by car, ADO bus, or Maya Train. MID has direct flights from Houston, Dallas, Miami, Toronto, Madrid (seasonal), and many Mexican cities. From MID to Campeche is about 2 hours — by rental car, ADO Lujo from the CAME terminal, or Maya Train.
Cancún is Mexico's most-connected airport, with direct flights from North America, Europe, and Latin America — and often the cheapest international fares. From Cancún, the Maya Train takes you to Campeche via Mérida, with scenic stops in Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, and Izamal. It's a comfortable way into the southeast without driving.
2 hours, 175 km. Take 180-D (toll road) — fastest and safest, toll about $200 MXN. The 180 (free road) passes through small towns like Hecelchakán and Tenabo — slower, but more interesting. Both end at Campeche's Periférico; the historic center is on the seaward side.
5–6 hours by car. Long but possible. To skip the drive, consider the Maya Train — comfortable, air-conditioned, and no driving required.
Possible but rarely worth it — 14+ hours. Much faster to fly direct to CPE.
Local agencies in Mérida (Carriba, Maya Holiday, México Rent A Car) tend to be cheaper than international chains. Get the full insurance coverage at the counter — Mexican law only covers basics; expanding coverage is much cheaper at the agency than via credit card. Driving in the Yucatán Peninsula is easy: highways in good condition, secondary roads well-marked, low traffic.
The Maya Train, in operation since late 2023, connects Campeche with Cancún, Mérida, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Izamal, and Palenque, among other points across southeastern Mexico. It's comfortable, air-conditioned, with modern coaches and panoramic views — an elegant, scenic way to move around the peninsula without driving.
The Campeche station is about 20 minutes from the historic center; a shuttle bus to downtown costs $18 MXN, or a taxi runs $250–300 MXN. Buy tickets at trenmaya.gob.mx — availability can be limited in high season, so book ahead.
ADO is Mexico's largest bus operator and the most reliable way to reach Campeche from anywhere in the southeast. Comfortable, on-time, with several service tiers (Lujo, GL, ADO standard).
The Campeche bus terminal is on Av. Patricio Trueba, just outside the walled enclosure — about 5 minutes by taxi to the historic center ($50–80 MXN). Buy tickets online at ado.com.mx or in the app. Reserve 3–7 days in advance during high season.
The historic walled center is approximately 1 km × 1 km. Everything that matters — Cathedral, bastions, restaurants, museums, all the Casonas MX properties — is 10–15 minutes on foot. You don't need a car inside the walls.
For excursions (Edzná, beaches at Champotón, Calakmul) or trips outside the enclosure:
For direct bookings, group reservations, productions, or bespoke cultural experiences — every stay begins with a conversation.
